Walking with Purpose: Personal Mission of Hope and Healing

Updated: Jun 1

This Year, I Am Walking with Purpose

Fit + Girl Virtual Walk/Run – July 19, 2025

Since 2020, I've hosted the Fit + Girl Virtual Walk/Run, creating a space for movement, reflection, and wellness. Each year, participants from all over come together to walk or run, united by a shared commitment to health and community. This year, the walk will hold a deeper significance for me.

On March 15th, we faced an unimaginable loss as we bid farewell to my older brother, who was only 56 years old. His sudden passing has left a lasting impact on our hearts.

In his memory, I'm channeling my grief into purpose.

In 2026, I will spearhead a medical outreach initiative in Nigeria through WellSpring VitalHub, with the objective of offering free health education, wellness consultations, and preventive screenings to underserved communities.

Why Nigeria?

Nigeria faces significant healthcare challenges, particularly in rural areas. According to a 2023 report from the Nigerian Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), over 60% of Nigeria’s rural population lacks access to functional primary healthcare centers. Many existing centers are either understaffed or lack basic amenities, including electricity and clean water. Vanguard News

The doctor-to-patient ratio in Nigeria is alarmingly low, with approximately one doctor for every 9,083 patients, far below the World Health Organization's recommendation of one doctor per 600 people.  This shortage is heightened by the emigration of healthcare professionals seeking better opportunities abroad. Furthermore, only about 20% of the 30,000 primary healthcare facilities across Nigeria are fully functional, limiting access to essential medical services. Slum & Rural Health Initiative+1PMC+1

These systemic issues contribute significantly to preventable illnesses and deaths, highlighting the urgent need for comprehensive reform and targeted interventions. Numerous factors within our healthcare systems, including access to quality medical care, socioeconomic disparities, and public health policies, play a crucial role in determining health outcomes for individuals and communities. For instance, individuals living in low-income neighborhoods often face barriers such as limited access to healthcare facilities, lack of affordable health insurance, and insufficient health education, all of which can lead to a higher prevalence of chronic diseases and conditions that could otherwise be managed or prevented.

By bringing healthcare services directly to these communities, we can make a tangible difference in people's lives.

Your support can bring essential healthcare services to those who need them most.

Let's walk for those we've lost. Let's walk for those still here. Let's walk for health equity together.
